Always control the opponent's sternum to prevent him from sitting up to attack. Instead of pressing the opponent's hip down, you can control his sleeve and stand to force his guard open. Press the opponent's knee down, replace the new space with your knee, and hug around his head for control to initiate passing Half Guard.
