The important thing to remember when trying to escape from an inferior position, like under Side Control, is to create space to recover back your guard without giving your opponent any openings to attack or advance. This starts by keeping your arms tucked in close to your chest with your hands in front of his face and body. Solidly plant your feet on the mat close to your butt, and bridge up into him, creating space for your hips to escape away as you extend your arm to post against his hip. Now, before he has a chance to get past your leverage, swing your bottom knee through into a butterfly hook, while preventing him from circling around with the Half Guard. To recompose the Closed Guard, take out the butterfly hook by escaping your hip out first before crossing the ankles behind his back.
