The common headlock is a very instinctive grappling hold and will oftentimes come as a natural response when an attacker tries to physically manhandle you. Fortunately, the headlock is a control that leaves his body vulnerable for counterattack: Simply, maintain a stiff, upright posture so you don't bend at your waist, drive your hips slightly forward, and lower your level, dropping into a solid base. One of your hands reaches up and over his shoulder to push away his face, while the other scoops underneath his knee. Tip him over and lift from a squatting position to take him down to the mat, rendering his headlock virtually useless.
