Avoid the urge to aggressively hug your opponent close to you when he is pinning you from Side Control; doing so will oftentimes leave your limbs in a vulnerable position and allow him to capitalize for the finish. Instead, hold your elbows in close to your body, and use the power and elevation of your hips to generate the space necessary for escape. Bump your far shoulder free so you can base in a Turtle position to attack for a Single Leg Takedown.
